A Brief History Of Point To Point Racing

The first recorded, and now legendary Steeplechase match, took place in Ireland from Buttevant Church to St. Marys Church, Doneraile, in Cork in 1752. The riders raced from the steeple in one church to the steeple in the second church, hence the name steeplechasing was formulated.

Point to Point Steeplechases are governed by special Regulations made, from time to time, by the Stewards of the I.N.H.S. Committee, entitled Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Regulations for Point to Point Steepelchases, which may be obtained from the Office of the I.N.H.S. Committee, The Curragh, Co. Kildare.

The Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee was formed in 1869 and Point to Point Steeplechasing has become very popular in Ireland, with approximately one hundred meetings being held in a calendar year.
